To Sarah Palin
Feminism. I do not think it means what you think it means.
I’ve gone into outrages towards those who have tried to tell someone that they’re not feminist, I admit this. However, it’s usually over something like, “Oh my GOD that woman thinks she’s a feminist, but she shaves her armpits!” or “YOU think YOU’RE a feminist, despite the fact that you decided to be a stay-at-home mom? No. Way.”
To that I say, “SUCK IT.”
And it’s not just because of the abortion issue. That, I’m still grappling with myself.
When the policies and ideologies you support are not pro-woman, you’re not a feminist. You may be a woman, and you may be glad that you made it in the world and, goshdarnit didn’t you deserve it! But supporting yourself does not imply support of other woman and other populations who are still struggling for rights. Furthermore, the way I was taught about feminism is that it’s not just about women, but about support of all people of all genders, races, sexualities, etc.
A big fail and a hearty STFU to you, Sarah Palin.
